Shatzel buying Colter Bay, plans renovations

Beer specialist and restaurateur Mike Shatzel has reached a deal to buy Colter Bay Grill, a longstanding fixture at Delaware Avenue and Allen Street.

He’ll take over the lease on Feb. 1 and close the place for renovations, planning to reopen in April, Shatzel said. The restaurant, 561 Delaware Ave., was opened in 1988 by the Brinkworth family.

Plans include opening up the main room, installing a new draft beer system, redoing the bathrooms, and replacing kitchen equipment, Shatzel said.

“I’m not going to change a whole lot,” he said. “Just bringing it back to past glories.” There will be plenty of local beer, he said, and an updated food menu.

Shatzel’s partners in the business will be his wife Suzanne, Derek and Jessica Eastwood, and Tony Martina, the chef at Blue Monk, Shatzel said.Shatzel is a partner or owner in Blue Monk, Allen Burger Venture, Moor Pat, Liberty Hound, Coles and Thin Man Brewery, a brewery-restaurant under way on Elmwood Avenue at the former location of Faherty’s and Toro.
